Voodoo Doughnut: Mile High

If you know anything about doughnuts or Portland, then you know Voodoo Doughnuts. Renowned for their quirky take on the delicious breakfast ring, they have doughnuts with fruity cereal bits, various cream fillings, and their titular doughnut that resembles a voodoo doll being stabbed in the heart by a pretzel. While in Colorado, I was able to visit their Denver branch and give a few doughnuts a go for myself.

First, I only tried two doughnuts. These monsters are big. Very big. They have some exceptionally large ones, but even their normal selections are larger than most people’s fists. The fact that I managed to eat two is a feat unto itself. I tried the Old Dirty Bastard and their Viscous Hibiscus.

I started with the Viscous Hibiscus, being a fan of flower flavors in general. The raised yeast doughnuts at Voodoo Doughnut are all exceptionally delicious: The perfect amount of raise, a perfect texture, and a delicate sweetness that doesn’t overwhelm. These doughnuts are worth it even without all the gimmicks. That being said, the Viscous Hibiscus has a hibiscus flower-flavored frosting with black sprinkles. The frosting was still nice and gooey: not too runny and not too dry. The flower flavor was very slight; it wasn’t until I got to the hold in the center where the glaze pooled into a large chunk where I really tasted that hibiscus. A very unique and interesting doughnut, to be sure!

Next was the Old Dirty Bastard, a doughnut covered in white frosting, oreo crumbles, and drizzled with peanut butter. This one was devilishly decadent. I’m a big fan of peanut butter, and to have that hot and drizzled over the top of the doughnut earned it a ton of brownie points. The crunchiness of the oreo pieces might turn some people off, given that it might be too much contrast with the perfect chewiness of the doughnut, but I didn’t mind the contrast. It was an awesome doughnut (and they have a vegan variety, too!).

Yes they do!

If you ever get the chance to have some Voodoo Doughnuts, I’d highly recommend stopping in and getting a doughnut or two to share with friends!
